Mattar Paneer |Green Peas with Cottage Cheese in Tomato Sauce

A delicacy across Indian restaurants, mattar paneer can sometimes be taxing to make. Here I share a quick and easy way to make restaurant-style mattar paneer in two simple steps

Recipe

Prepartion Time: 25 mins Cooking Time: 15 mins
Ingredients: Method:
  • 250 gm paneer cubes
  • 4 medium-sized ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 250 gm green peas
  • 1 medium-sized onion, diced
  • 1/2 tsp honey (optional but recommended)
  • some butter

Spices

  • 2 tbsp ginger & garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp Kashmiri Mirchi powder (optional, as it will only red colour to the curry)
  • 1 1/2 tsp cumin coriander powder (dhana jeera powder)
  • salt to taste

Whole spices

  • 5-6 peppercorns
  • 2-3 cloves

Tomato Paste

  • Heat a pan and add 2 cubes of butter
  • as the butter melts add in the whole spices and also the onions
  • mix them well and let the onions change to pinkish transparent colour
  • add ginger & garlic paste
  • add also the chopped tomatoes & sauté well
  • add rest of the spices – turmeric, red chilli, Kashmiri red chilli & cumin coriander powder
  • mix them well, cover the pan and let them cook completely so that the tomatoes become pulpy.

Once the tomato mix cools down, take it in a grinder and grind it into a nice smooth curry.

Cook the curry

  • In the same pan, add 1 cube of butter again and heat it
  • Keeping the heat low, add the ground tomato curry gently with continuous stirring, since as the curry starts to boil it will forms bubbles and spew out of the pan
  • add the green peas & also add the paneer cubes
  • add salt to taste
  • cover the pan and let it cook for another 5 mins
  • after the paneer and peas are cooked, open the pan, add 1/2 tsp of honey (optional) and you’re done!
  • You can garnish with a bit of chopped coriander
