Batata Bhujne

A very simple Potato & Tomato Curry from the kitchen of Pathare Prabhu cummunity of Mumbai. This curry or Batata Bhujne has three main ingredients and which can be enjoyed with rice, chapati or even bread.

Introduction

Batatya cha Bhujna which is nothing but Potato & Tomato curry hails from the Pathare Prabhu community of Mumbai. The specialty of this curry is it doesn’t require any tadka & requires only few ingredients which we have seen in this series. 

Indian cooking that goes easy on the pocket 

A simple dal rice & a potato sabzi makes a very homely and satisfying meal. We have already seen how to make dal rice, now let’s make a sabzi and finish off the meal.

So Lets check how we to cook this vegetarian Pathare Prabhu Style Potato Curry!

Prepartion Time: 10 mins Cooking Time: 15 mins
Ingredients: Method:
  • 3 potatoes – cut in round slices
  • 3 tomatoes – cut in round slices
  • 2 onion, finely chopped
  • fresh coriander, finely chopped
  • green peas (optional)
  • 1 tsp garlic paste

Spices

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp Pathare Prabhu Metkut / Methi Sambar/ Pickel Masala (optional)
  • salt to taste

Prepare & mix Ingredients 

  • take a pan
  • add the onion & chopped coriander 
  • do not place the pan on gas
  • crush & mix them very well with your hand
  • add oil & garlic paste
  • add red chilli powder Turmeric powder & metkut
  • add salt to taste
  • crush & mix all the ingredients with your hand
  • once all ingredients are mixed lets arrange the other ingredients
  • add all the chopped onions
  • aggrange the potatoes on the top
  • followed by tomatoes so that the tomato slices are stacked on top of the potato slices
  • add some green peas on top & now lets start cooking
  • Cook the Bhujne
  • Place the pan on the gas & cook on low to medium gas
  • add little bit of water and cover the pan. DO NOT add a lot of water as the tomatoes onced cooked will let out a lot of water
  • after about 5 mins, just open and give the pan a shake. do not stir as we do not want to disturb the arrangements of the potatoes and tomatoes
  • this will ensure that the ingredients do not stick to the pan
  • cover it up again and repete the above step again in 5 mins
  • …. after 5 mins there should be a very good aroma of the potatoes and tomatoes cooking
  • open the pan and check of the patatoes are cooked.
  • If they are remove the pan from the gas
  • Batata Bhujne is ready to ENJOY

Dal & Rice

If you don’t like coriander, you can ignore it, it will change the taste and colour of the final dish, just squeeze some fresh lemon juice and you can enjoy the new taste of the dish
