Doi Maach | Bengali Style Yogurt Fish Curry | Fish with Yogurt Gravy

Tanginess of yogurt mixed with Indian spices makes this fish curry a delicacy. Here is my version of this classic Bengali gem

Recipe

Prepartion Time: 10 mins Cooking Time: 15 mins
Ingredients: Method:
  • 2 fresh fish fillets
  • 2 medium-sized onions, sliced
  • 250 gm fresh dahi or yogurt or curd, beaten to a smooth consistency
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 1 tsp garlic paste
  • 4-5 fresh green chillies slit into half
  • fresh coriander

Spices

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/5 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • salt to taste

Whole spices 

  • 3-4 cinnamon sticks
  • 3-4 cardamon pods or elaichi
  • 4 cloves
  • 4-5 peppercorns
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Remember, quantities and combinations of these spices can be mixed and played around with, based on your taste

Marinating & frying the fish

  • cut the fish fillets into 2 inch slices
  • add some salt and turmeric powder on them
  • mix well
  • heat some oil in a pan
  • shallow fry the fish pieces lightly in the oil and keep aside, (2 mins from both sides) 
  • in a bowl, add yogurt, add  red chilli powder, turmeric powder & mix well
  • add the fried fish in the yogurt and keep aside for 5-10 mins

Final preparation

  • in a pan heat some oil and add all the whole spices and mix well
  • add 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • add sliced onions & cook them over medium heat, cook until the onions are transluscent
  • add ginger paste, garlic paste and cook for a minute
  • add the fish marinated in yogurt
  • let it cook for 5 mins
  • add the chopped green chillies
  • let it all boil till the fish is cooked
  • add salt to taste
