Dadpe Pohe

Dadpe pohe is a Marathi name derived from the process of keeping rice flakes pressed under a heavy weight. An alternative to the usual kande pohe, dadpe pohe can be made quickly but should be consumed soon after being made.

Recipe

Ingredients: Method:
  • 2 portions poha (flattened rice flakes)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp freshly grated coconut
  • chopped coriander
  • finely chopped chillies
  • some peanuts
  • curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • fresh lemon juice
  • 2-3 tbsp buttermilk (optional)
  • 1 tsp sugar & salt to taste
  • add the onions and chillies to a large bowl
  • add coconut
  • squeeze lemon juice and mix
  • add the poha. If you have some buttermilk, you may add that now
  • add some of the coriander & mix well
  • add sugar and salt. Now use a plate to cover the mixture and place a heavy object like a jar on top for 15-20 mins. Let the poha rest underneath the heavy weight. 
  • Meanwhile, heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and peanuts
  • add the curry leaves
  • heat till the peanuts change colour and become crunchy
  • Now remote the lid from the pohe. Pour the oil mixture on the pohe, mix well and garnish with rest of the coriander. Dadpe pohe are ready!
